Options and consent

Your pet is scheduled for general anesthesia and/or a surgical procedure. Before your pet is placed under anesthesia, the veterinarian and/or veterinary assistant will discuss the procedure and any potential risks with you. You will have the opportunity to ask questions at this time.

Your pet will undergo a general physical examination. This allows for the detection of any underlying physical issues that could increase the risks associated with anesthesia or surgery. If any abnormalities are found, the veterinarian will discuss them with you. If necessary, the anesthesia protocol will be adjusted, or additional testing will be recommended. Should fleas be found on your pet, we will treat them with a product we consider appropriate in order to reduce the risk of infestation.

Although a physical examination can detect many physical issues, there is always a possibility of organ dysfunction that cannot be identified during the exam. This can increase the risks associated with anesthesia.

You may therefore choose to expand the examination with the following tests:

Even with all precautions in place, there is always a risk of complications when general anesthesia and/or surgery is performed. Supplementing the physical examination with the tests mentioned above significantly further reduces the risk associated with anesthesia. You will receive the test results before the anesthesia is administered.

By signing this form, you acknowledge that you are aware of the risks associated with the anesthesia and/or the surgery to be performed, and that you consent to the planned procedure and any additional tests or interventions indicated.

Unexpected complications may occur even after the surgery. Any costs resulting from this will be charged. One post-surgical consultation is included.
